| Week 17 The Health Update Erika went in for a blood test a few days ago and they couldn't find her vein. This happens frequently to lots of people I know. I don't completely understand why. I mean, don't the veins show through the skin? Erika has very pale skin, and they still have problems. Beats me. Otherwise, she is fine and feeling good. Gender issues Most of you who responded thought I would prefer a boy, but many thought I would prefer either one just as well. The most common response was that the child must like baseball and that any other concerns were irrelevant tome. How my reputation precedes me. Here's how I feel. If I had to choose, I would choose to have a girl. Here's why. Speaking from personal experience, a man, in most cases, will spend his entire adult life trying to figure out what drives a woman, why women feel the way they do, etc. Conversely, a woman will spend infinitely less time trying to figure out why a man acts the way they do. Certainly, occasionally women do think about these things, but (and I've checked this out with Erika) on the whole, men spend much more time thinking about it. So, generally, I think a girl would be able to spend her time more productively because of this. It comes down to a quote I read recently. "Women are born knowing things men spend their entire lives trying to figure out." I also think that in the lifetime of our child we will see the last remaining barriers to women in society be broken down, and it would be exciting to have a daughter while all that is going on. If we have a boy, I will not be at all disappointed, but I admit to having a slight preference. And, yes, an interest in baseball would be nice for a child of either gender, but it is not a requirement. I get along with lots of people who aren't sports fans! So there are my thoughts on gender. I hope it didn't offend anyone. Next time: The holiday review |
