| Week 23 The Health Update This week Erika had an appointment with the midwives. Everything is fine, except the midwives told us that the baby is about two weeks "bigger" than normal for a 23 week old fetus. This led the midwives to ask if we may have counted the weeks wrong before our first visit. We're pretty sure we didn't miscount, so we just apparently have a big baby. So...Erika is a little worried about birthing a 10-pounder. Ouch. We are also beginning to research birth classes and doulas, so that will no doubt fill my third trimester journals. The Desire to Plan Last weekend Erika decided that we should get our financial and estate plans in order. These are both very sensible things to do, and she is absolutely right that we will not have any time to think about these things once the baby is born. However, for someone who has never had any assets in life, I find financial and estate planning a little foreign. Still, we sat down and talked about starting a college education savings plan and contacting a lawyer about setting up a basic will. Did you know the projected cost of a 4-year college degree in 2020 is over $200,000? Yowzer. Luckily, the concept of compound interest exists. The will is mainly to establish a guardian for our child and cat if we should, uh, perish or be unable to complete the duties of parenthood. This is something we will have to think long and hard about. Anybody want to be the guardian of our child or backup owner for May May? Statements as to why we should pick you for these important duties are now being accepted. OK, this isn't how we're going to really decide this, but if you submit a really cool statement, you would at least get mentioned in a future journal. Next week: Shopping for anything with wheels |
